Debit Card [Check Card] Processing

check card

A check card is a type of “debit” card that looks similar to a credit card but acts like a check because the purchase amount is deducted from the cardholder's checking account. Check card transactions can be used in the same manner that a standard credit card would be used for. With Check Cards, the funds from the transaction are taken right out of the cardholder's checking account. If there is no money in the account, the transaction is declined.

When using a check card at a retail location, the cardholder can choose to sign for the transaction or enter their Pin-Number if the merchant is setup to do so, but when using a Payment Gateway / Virtual Terminal, then this changes Pin-Based transactions.

If a cardholder wishes to use their Check Card by entering their Pin-Number, it cannot be done. To do so, a merchant would need a PinPad that is encrypted with the most recent encryption guidelines. This may be possible for a retail-based merchant using SecurePay but not for eCommerce or MoTo merchants. The cardholder isn't at the merchant location to physically enter in their pin number.
